Prior to establishing McDonell Business Solutions in June 1992, Peter (christened Ian Peter, but has never answered to Ian) spent some 15 years as one of Boral Limited's Chief General Managers, with company wide responsibility for such diverse areas as quarrying, energy, concrete products, road surfacing and tyre distribution. Over that time Boral Limited was, and still is, a major Australian public company. In the early 70's Peter also held the national Australian role of Wholesale Sales Manager with Mobil Oil Australia Ltd. Peter is legally qualified (LL.B Hons - Adelaide University) and has been admitted to the Bar of the Supreme Court in South Australia (as a Barrister and Solicitor), Victoria (as a Solicitor) and New South Wales (as a Barrister). Over the years he has both attended and presented at many management training courses, conferences and seminars in Australia and overseas. He is a Past President of the Chatswood Chamber of Commerce, and has been a Director of the Chatswood Club Limited. He was also, for several years, a Director of the Sydney PC Users Group and is a Past President of the Everglades Wine Appreciation Club. Given his past Police service, Peter is also an active member of the NSW Retired Police Association - Central Coast Branch.

Formative years - Boarding School (Prince Alfred College, Adelaide 1953-55), Adelaide School of Mines (2 years engineering), South Australian Police service 5 years (Dux Training College 1958), University of Adelaide Law Degree (top honours student 1965), articled law clerk (Alderman Clark Ligertwood and Rice) and thence admitted to the Bar of the Supreme Court in South Australia (as a Barrister and Solicitor 1967).

McDonell Business Solutions, an ongoing semi-retirement interest, is mainly centred on computer related activities. These activities include the provision of objective advice, assistance and training in computing areas, the supply and installation of computers, upgrading and trouble shooting computers, and the supply and installation of printers, scanners, modems, routers and other networking equipment, and other computing peripherals. For more detail see the Business Profile page. In the pursuit of this business Peter has undertaken formal training on both system software with Microsoft, and on hardware installation and diagnostics.
In the 90's Peter completed the Microsoft Certified Professional requirements for Implementing and Supporting Microsoft Windows 95. See the Font Pharos page for Peter's past activities as a computing industry journalist.
